But it’s essentially a mashup of a Fog Cutter, a Ramos Gin Fizz, and a mocktail I make for the lady friend before we go to work. Grapefruit, kiwi, Nicaraguan rum, gin, brandy, and elderflower syrup. Delicious.

Tiki in a snowstorm, I like it! Your version looks like a good one.

As for the sherry, I’ve come to believe that I just don’t have the “sherry gene.” My hat is off to sherry drinkers everywhere. As for the aquavit, I can see how it wouldn’t be everyone’s favorite. I can take it or leave it, but it satisfies my perceived requirement for an unusual taste surprise at the end of the drink. I don’t think I would have thought of it by myself—it’s definitely inspired by the Viking Fog Cutter.

Thanks for adding your recipe.

I used this page as a springboard, and basically made two different Fog Cutters every time I subbed in a different ingredient, one your way and one Bergeron’s. I have to hand it to you; the balanced orange and lemon is really key (except for the time I used Meyer lemons, but that should have been obvious). I’ve subbed in blood orange juice, minneola juice, meyer lemon juice, etc…your proportions are good, with only minimal tinkering. My final favorite is:

.75 oz Scarlet Ibis
.25 oz Cruzan Black Strap
1 oz Smith and Cross
.75 oz Anchor Junipero
1 oz Hine Rare VSOP
1.5 oz Lemon Juice
1.5 oz Navel Orange Juice
.5 oz Homemade Orgeat
East India Solera Sherry

I do disagree with you regarding the sherry. I enjoy the nuts and fruit that it adds at the end. But having a sharp lemon flavor just before encountering does make it odd. Likewise, I find the caraway addition you suggested, vis-a-vis aquavit, very strange. Chalk it up to different palates. Anyway, thanks for this post, it helped me rediscover my tiki obsession in the midst of all this snow.

Good to hear from you, Bob—

I didn’t go to enough movies in my youth to learn this version of the Suicide. It’s brilliant, and very amusing. I can picture it. Thanks for adding it here.

But “Green River”? What th’…?

For us, a “suicide” was pressing all the buttons, including root beer and Green River. We thought we liked it.

The Jamaican is far superior.

Hi, Kate,

One rum will do it, use whatever you have and you’ll end up with a pretty good Fog Cutter. I hope your friend enjoys it, too.

Thanks for taking time to write.

Hi, Al, I’ll take your complaint as a compliment, thank you.

I agree that Myers’s would likely be a great choice for a float—widely available, big dark Jamaican flavor, yet still perhaps a more accessible flavor for lots of drinkers. Good suggestion, and I look forward to trying it.

Thanks for the recommendation!

A Myerss float may work . As for mixing alcohols, I was making a few Hemingway Daiquiris and was low on the rum, and slid in some vodka. Nobody noticed or at least they didn’t complain.
My only complaint about you is that you don’t write enough columns/posts.

I can’t say I have the luxury of all those rums, but I love citrus things and if they go down refreshing and smooth, all the better. I actually have a friend who might be interested in this type of drink.
