I am delighted that you are visiting Cold Glass, and that you care enough about internet privacy to check this page.

This page covers two types of privacy-related data: your mailing address and cookies.

Privacy and your email address

There are three ways that your address becomes visible to me here at Cold Glass: the mailing list, comments and the feedback form.

The mailing list

I use mail updates to notify readers of new postings. (You can sign up to receive those mailings in the info box in the right sidebar of the Cold Glass home page, and I encourage you to do so.) I use the information only to let you know I’ve published new articles. I will not sell or share that information with others.

The notification list isn’t visible to the public, but it is visible to me as the Cold Glass site administrator, and of course to WordPress’s mail servers, where the data actually resides, and which manage the notifications. You can remove your address from the mailing list by following the “manage” link in the right-hand sidebar of the Cold Glass front page.

(There is some irony, I suppose, in that I would probably repurpose the notification list to preannounce any radical changes in this policy. Joseph Heller might have found that amusing.)

Comments

You need to provide your name and mail address to comment on postings here at Cold Glass. The mail address is not visible to the public, but it is visible to me as the site administrator. I have used that address on rare occasions to reach commenters by a “back channel” if need be, perhaps to clarify something in a comment. As with notification addresses, I will not sell or share that information with others.

Feedback

The feedback form on the About page is mail-based. None of the communication is visible to the public, but it is visible to me as the site administrator. The address you use there will be the address I respond to. I will not sell or share that information with others.

How Cold Glass uses cookies

Cold Glass is built on the WordPress.com publishing platform, which uses cookies. There are no “tracking” cookies associated with Cold Glass.

My testing shows that this site generates at least one persistent “Cold Glass” browser cookie. According to WordPress support documentation, WordPress uses it to guess if you are already a follower of the site, and adjusts page displays accordingly.

Cold Glass may generate additional “WordPress” cookies on your local system as a function of your commenting on posts. According to WordPress, these cookies store your name, mail address, and url information to streamline subsequent commenting sessions on WordPress blogs.

All browsers allow you to control cookies by permitting them, blocking them, or alerting you as they are written.

Privacy policy changes

I may change this policy over time, though I expect any changes to be minor. Changes would be posted on this page.

Note that, while I have no intention of sharing private information with others, there is the case where the American legal system could compel me to disclose what I know; I would very likely comply.
